Float Switch vs. Pump Switch: What’s the Difference?

Float Switch vs. Pump Switch: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to keeping your sewer lift station running smoothly, the right switching system makes all the difference. Two of the most common terms you’ll hear are float switch and pump switch. While they may sound similar, they serve very different purposes—and knowing the difference can help you choose the right setup for your lift station.

Float Switch

A float switch is a device installed inside the lift station basin that detects liquid levels. As wastewater rises or falls, the float moves with it. When the float reaches a certain height, it sends a signal to the control panel to either turn the pump on or off.

  • How it works: Wired directly into the control panel.
  • Role: Communicates with the panel to control pump operations.
  • Typical use: Lift stations with control panels (especially duplex systems or stations with advanced monitoring).

Pump Switch

A pump switch is a little different. Instead of being wired into a control panel, it is wired directly into the pump itself. The pump switch automatically turns the pump on and off as the float rises and falls—no control panel required.

  • How it works: Wired directly into the pump motor.
  • Role: Provides automatic pump control without needing a control panel.
  • Typical use: Smaller lift stations or grinder pump packages where simplicity and cost savings are priorities.

Key Difference at a Glance

  • Float Switch: Works with a control panel to signal pump operation.
  • Pump Switch: Works directly with the pump itself to control operation.

Which One Do You Need?

  • If your system already uses a control panel, you’ll likely rely on float switches.
  • If you don’t have a control panel, or your pump is designed for plug-and-play use, you’ll need a pump switch.

At the end of the day, both switches serve the same purpose—making sure your pump runs when it should and shuts off when it shouldn’t. The difference comes down to how your lift station is designed.
